Rev. Dr. Beth Frykberg

For nearly five decades, Beth’s ministry was woven into the very life of this church. She grew up here at burlpres, knowing and loving its members and ministers across generations. Called from within this congregation, she attended Fuller Seminary, where she quickly became a respected leader among her peers. Under the guidance of her mentor, Dr. James Loder (father of our own Kim Engelmann), Beth earned her PhD, writing nearly 500 pages on Karl Barth’s theology as it relates to early childhood development and Christian formation. Later, she authored Jesus Fractal, a work of theological insight that received wide acclaim.

Beth’s pastoral ministry was marked by compassion and depth. She listened to people’s whole stories without judgment, offering counsel, hope, and a steady presence. She brought complex theological truths down to earth in her sermons, officiated at countless funerals, and sat faithfully at the bedsides of those nearing the end of life. During our “Year of Prayer,” Beth wrote a prayer for each day—a treasure chest of devotion for this church.

Yet perhaps her greatest legacy is love. Beth gave generously of her time, wisdom, and resources—not only here, but to people in places she would never see this side of heaven. If we could number all the lives touched by her kindness, the grains of sand on the shore she loved so much would not be enough.
